Family owned and operated since its establishment, Telluride Music Company began as Sheridan Music in 1992. Originally opened by Neil Wilkie and located in a small space in the historic Liberty Bell building on South Spruce Street, it provided a selection of CD music, strings and accessories for the local music folks in Telluride. Shortly after its opening, a small number of acoustic guitars were added to the inventory selection, and a year later, the shop became an Authorized Dealer of C.F. Martin guitars.
Slowly, the business began to take hold and the need to move into a larger space became necessary. In 1996, a great opportunity provided itself in the historic Sheridan Pool Hall building, which was located nearby at 201 East Colorado Avenue, next to North Spruce Park. Telluride Music Company operated successfully from this location for the next 18 years.
Shortly after the move to Colorado Avenue, Dave and Karen Lamb acquired the business. The Lambs were drawn to the Telluride area years earlier while working for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Upon their acquisition of the business, a new transformation for Telluride Music Company immediately began to take place. The product line expanded significantly with a broad selection of various acoustic stringed instruments, including mandolins, banjos, fiddles and a wider selection of guitars. A woodworker by trade, Dave had previously owned and operated Matterhorn Millworks, Inc., a company that specialized in high quality architectural millwork, cabinetry and specialty wood products. Throughout his career as a woodworker, Dave was always interested and engaged in instrument setup, repair and lutherie. Combining his woodworking and music skills had long been a desire, and with the blessing of his loving wife and family, a second career for Dave and the Lamb family began.
In the summer of 2010, a significant addition was made to the Telluride Music Company staff. That year, Tom Nading came on board as a full-time employee. A North Carolina native, Tom graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May of 2010, and his adventuresome spirit and passion for skiing guided him to the mountains of Colorado, eventually landing here in Telluride. As a skilled musician, repair technician and sales associate, he had some experience working at a music store in Greensboro, North Carolina. His friendly, southern demeanor was embraced by all, and today he serves as General Manager for Telluride Music Company.
Another major development took place in 2014 with the sale of the building located at 201 East Colorado Avenue. A new home for the store was secured at 333 West Colorado Avenue, opening another chapter in the history of Telluride Music Company. The space was remodeled significantly to facilitate the needs of the business, including custom-made instrument display fixtures and a central humidification system. Customer feedback has been very positive, and we look forward to you visiting us at our new location whenever you find yourself in Telluride.
