At Telluride Music Co., we are honored to be an Authorized Dealer of Waterloo guitars, made in Austin, Tx., by Collings guitars. Since Bill Collings unveiled the Waterloo guitars in 2014, there’s been quite a buzz throughout the industry. These prewar-inspired instruments evoke the sound, feel and look of the affordable, workingman’s small-body guitars of the 1930s. More affordable than standard Collings models, the Waterloos have become incredibly popular—and incredibly hard to find. This WL-14L (serial #587) features a solid Sitka Spruce top that is ladder braced to provide a sweet, mellow and authentic-sounding prewar tone that definitely brings to mind the blues boxes of the ’30s. Its Mahogany back and sides add a dry, rich warmth. Although the output and response is not as precise as the X-braced models, the ladder bracing allows for so much more subtlety, and the top also begins to break up when you really push it, so this guitar can definitely be a blues machine. The satin finish and sunburst top are beautiful, and we love the accent of the tiger-stripe pickguard. Starting in 2016, all of the Waterloos will be built with drop-in saddles instead of cut-through saddles. To be fair, we don’t notice a difference in tone from the new saddle, but we definitely like the extra flexibility the drop-in allows for future setup adjustment or pickup installation. We always order Waterloos with truss rods. Even though some players like the authenticity of the T-bar, we think being able to adjust the action and relief in the neck is an important innovation of modern guitars.
