Collings guitars are highly revered for their richly balanced, prewar-sounding tone and Collings’ unparalleled commitment to quality and exceptional attention to detail. This 2000 D2HBaaaA (serial #5944) is a great example of the superlative instruments Collings can produce at the highest level. Its dreadnought body features the premium wood complement of an Adirondack Spruce top and “AAA” Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. The result is a huge sound with powerful bass and clear, cutting trebles. This guitar is hugely responsive and dynamic, and its powerful projection packs plenty of headroom. To be fair, this is one of the richest, most complex sounding Collings guitars we’ve handled. It’s loud and fat—simply a joy to play. Its tone reminds us of many rare and valuable prewar guitars, but its inviting feel—with a 1-11/16″ nut width—is eerily reminiscent of a ’41 Herringbone we sold last year. This one was ordered with an ivoroid-bound fingerboard and peghead. We also love the Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay because it matches the unique figuring of the back nicely.
